In the great tradition of grand Russian ballet, the Russian National Ballet Theatre presents a magical production of this beloved fantasy ballet. Since its premiere in 1877, Tchaikovsky's "Swan Lake" has become one of the most revered of classical ballets. The Russian National Ballet Theatre was founded in Moscow during the transitional period of Perestroika in the late 1980s, when many of the great dancers and choreographers of the Soviet Union's ballet institutions were exercising their new-found creative freedom by starting new, vibrant companies dedicated not only to the timeless tradition of classical Russian Ballet but to invigorate this tradition as the Russians began to accept new developments in the dance from around the world. In 1994, the legendary Bolshoi principal dancer Elena Radchenko was selected by Presidential decree to assume the first permanent artistic directorship of the company. Ms. Radchenko is the founder of the Russian National Ballet Theatre, and she has focused the Company on upholding the grand national tradition of the major Russian ballet works and developing new talents throughout Russia, with a repertory of virtually all of the great full works of Petipa: Don Quixote, La Bayadere, The Sleeping Beauty, Swan Lake, Raymonda, Paquita, Coppelia and La Sylphide, as well as productions of, among others, The Nutcracker, Sylvia, and La Fille Mal Gardee.            Givens Performing Arts Center, The University of North Carolina at Pembroke, 1 University Road, Pembroke NC 28372

4/25            Of Mice and Men by the Acting Company

Tickets: $25, $20, $15* / $12 child or student $5 UNCP Student / $15 Faculty or Staff. Contact 521-6361 for more information or to purchase tickets. Nobel and Pulitzer Prize-winner John Steinbeck’s tale of two drifters is one of the most widely read stories in America. Written as both a novella and a script for a play, Of Mice and Men tells the tragic story of two California migrant ranch workers during the Great Depression. George and Lennie have delusions of making enough money to buy their own place. Lennie, a man-child, is a little boy in the body of a man. George is ever cautious of his gentle giant friend, dangerously powerful yet in need of constant reassurance. Although Steinbeck emphasizes dreams throughout this work, his characters are often powerless, due to intellectual, economic and social realities. Fate is felt most heavily as George is left to face the question of how to deal with Lennie who, although in great danger, dreams only of their future, of their farm—as the sound of destiny bounces off the mountains. Since its founding by the legendary John Houseman and Margot Harley in 1972, The Acting Company has launched the careers of some of today’s finest actors—Kevin Kline, Rainn Wilson, Patti LuPone, Jeffrey Wright, Frances Conroy, Jesse L. Martin, Hamish Linklater to name a few—while performing 137 productions all across the country. See for yourself what makes The Acting Company the most praised touring repertory theater in America.            Givens Performing Arts Center, The University of North Carolina at Pembroke, 1 University Road, Pembroke NC 28372

The last year has dealt them several accomplishments, including being voted the Carolinas’ Best Rock Female, being featured on NPR’s The State of Things, an Emerging Artist Award from the Durham Arts Council, and a new album, Read Me Out Loud. It’s easy to understand the attention. Ross’s voice delivers a charming trill one moment, only to erupt in rough, bluesy emotion the next. It’s a powerful instrument that’s earned her comparisons to artists like Grace Potter and Edie Brickell among others. For more information and a complete schedule of events go to www.KeepPeaceInThePark.com. “Peace in the Park” Concert Series is a FREE event. Donations will be gladly accepted.
